Thattekad Bird Sanctuary

Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is one of the most famous and biodiverse natural centers in Kerala. Named after the renowned ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali, this bird sanctuary was established in 1983 as a result of his continuous efforts and recommendations. It is located near Kothamangalam in Ernakulam district, adjacent to the storage area of the Bhoothathankettu dam, a tributary of the Periyar. Spread over an area of about 25 square kilometers, Thattekad is a major paradise for birdwatchers and nature lovers.

The unique topography and climate of this place provide a suitable habitat for hundreds of rare bird species. Thattekad is a beautiful blend of evergreen forests, deciduous forests, grasslands and wetlands. More than two hundred and fifty species of birds have been found here, including the world-famous 'Sri Lankan Frogmouth', Malabar Trogon, hornbills, blue-eyed wild bullets, and various species of woodpeckers. It is also the home of many migratory birds that fly from faraway lands during the winter.

Thattekad forest is a haven not only for birds, but also for a variety of butterflies, reptiles, and mammals. Special watch towers and trekking facilities have been set up here by the Forest Department for bird watching. Thattekad Bird Sanctuary offers a great experience to researchers and tourists alike who want to get to know and study nature and wildlife. This area, which can be easily reached on the way from Kothamangalam to Kuttampuzha, is an invaluable treasure trove of Kerala's forest wealth.
